Days of Service
The Volunteer Center of Story County plans and coordinates large-scale service projects to engage the Story County community in service. Several days have been designated as national days of service, and others are long-standing days of action in the Story County Community
MLK Jr. Day of Service (January) – honoring Dr. King, Jr.’s legacy where, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen our community, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions.
Random Acts of Kindness Week (February) – highlighting the huge impact, small individual acts of service for others has in building a strong community through social media.
Global Youth Service Day (April) – Celebrating and mobilizing the millions of young people who improve their communities each day of the year through service as part of the largest service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth.
Stash the Trash (April) Spending one day cleaning up the public areas around the city of Ames and Iowa State's campus collecting trash and debris.
9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance (September) bringing communities together with a common purpose to honor 9/11 and commemorate the tragedy through volunteer service, representing a shared belief that by neighbor helping neighbor, we can make our country stronger and better for decades to come.
Make a Difference Day (October) Joining the efforts of millions of other volunteers around the world to improve the lives of others through service.
Winter Weatherization Blitz (November) – Partnering with Central Iowa RSVP, Heartland Senior Services and Mid-Iowa Community Action, mobilizing teams of volunteers to assist local homeowners in need with winterizing their homes against colder temperatures
Family Volunteer Day (November) – Encouraging families of all backgrounds to volunteer together on the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year through various projects appropriate for a variety of ages.
#GivingTuesday (December) – Celebrating generosity and service to our communities as part of the holiday celebrations, with a particular emphasis on engaging employee volunteer programs
