Four Components

Thanks to the United Way of Story County for the $7,200 grant to develop issue-centered service learning curricula, starting with poverty.

Also thanks to the Iowa Department of Education for the $7,000 grant to provide in-service training on service learning to educators and non-profit staff in June of 2009.

What is Service Learning?

Service Learning integrates meaningful community service with learning and reflection to teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities. There are four components of Service Learning: preparation, action, reflection and celebration/demonstration.

The Volunteer Center of Story County offers education and training on the topic of service learning. The VCSC Education Coordinator can also assist educators and community groups with leading  service learning projects.

For more information on service learning, contact Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Laura Logsdon at laura.logsdon@vcstory.org, or call 515-268-5323.
