To provide students with opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning; encourage healthy, active habits that will last a lifetime; and engage students and the Ames community in their food system from seed to
plate.
WHATS GOING ON AT THE KATE MITCHELL GARDEN?
Students spent the Fall harvesting their garden produce, growing fall crops and learning in the garden. Students got to taste the bounty of their work - trying tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and more, straight from the garden! Their harvest also raised money to sustain the future of the garden program; 4th and 5th graders manned their own produce stand at our successful Farmers' Market in September, earning $700 from our Mitchell grown produce! Local farmers, musicians, and others provided food, music, activities and lots of fun at this first annual harvest event!
Now that winter is upon us, the garden will soon be sleeping under a blanket of snow, but the learning at Kate Mitchell won't be snoozing! We are continuing our weekly after-school cooking club, as well as Pick a Better Snack nutrition education in all grade levels. Before we know it, it will be time to start planning our next garden season!
